Tradicionalmente, la identidad es formulada a través de un proceso de exclusión. No se trata de quien eres, sino de quien no eres. Latinx propone inclusividad como punto de partida, abierto a factores fluidos, diversos, e incluso individualistas para formar identidad. La búsqueda por definiciones y exclusividad en el siglo XX aparecen ahora anticuadas en comparación con la realidad del intercambio cultural en el siglo XXI. Las obras de arte en Latinx expresan la capacidad humana por la ingenuidad y la negociación cultural presente en el arte, incluso cuando las etiquetas identifican a sus autores como Cubano, o Latina. El espectador es invitado a descartar etiquetas, a examinar las obras por sus méritos propios, y a considerar la diversidad que Latinx fomenta, por encima de todo.

Latinx representa una parte en expansión de la colección del museo y refleja una importante influencia en el arte del Oeste Americano. Las piezas recientemente adquiridas de Yolanda Gonzáles, Leo Limón, Paul Sierra, y Eloy Torrez son presentados en Latinx, así como cuatro paños, piezas de arte realizadas en pañuelos por Chicanos reclusos en prisiones en Texas.

Traditionally, identity is formulated via a process of exclusion. It is not about who you are; it is about who you are not. Latinx proposes inclusivity as the point of departure, open to fluid and diverse factors formulating identity. Quests for definitions and exclusivity in the 20th century appear antiquated against the reality of cultural exchange in the 21st century. The works in Latinx convey the human capacity for ingenuity and cultural negotiation in art, even as labels identify their makers as Cuban or Latina. The viewer is invited to dismiss labels and examine the artworks on their individual merits, to consider the diversity Latinx fosters first and foremost.

Latinx represents a growing part of the NEHMA collection and reflects a significant influence in Western American art. New acquisitions by Yolanda González, Leo Limón, Paul Sierra, and Eloy Torrez are featured in Latinx in addition to four paños, artwork rendered on handkerchiefs by Chicanos incarcerated in Texas prison.
