The USU Eastern Library & Learning Commons will be hosting a traveling exhibit “Bringing War Home” August 10ththru September 30th. The exhibit features object stories of veterans and military families. In addition to this exhibit will be a companion exhibit “Paint the Desert: Memory, Identity, and Commemoration on the T-Walls of the Global War on Terror” by A.J. Arriola. Both exhibits will be available for viewing during LLC open hours: Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm. Beginning August 31, the LLC will be open Monday thru Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm and Sundays 4pm-9pm. The LLC would also like to extend an invitation for visitors to view the Carbon College WWII Memorial Roll, LLC room 108, that was dedicated in April 1946 in honor of the Carbon College students comprising of high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores who lost their lives in the war.

The Utah State University Faculty Senate is a central component of shared governance, represents the faculty in educational policy matters, including admissions, curricula, and degree requirements, while also considering faculty welfare and other issues of professional interest. It comprises elected faculty members, appointed administrators, and student officers, with broad authority to review policies, propose changes, and engage with the University's leadership on matters of importance. Come join the USUSA Big Band Swing Dance Club as we have a casual atmoshpere teaching and participating in vintage swing dance styles popular largely from the 1920s through the 1950s and beyond! No partner or experience required, though anyone is welcome to join! Instruction often is approximately the first 30 minutes, followed by opportunities for dancing, socializing, and asking questions!

Utahns know the truth: our workplaces weren’t built for today’s families — and everyone is paying the price. Women continue to face stalled careers and limited access to leadership, while men who step up at home often face stigma or subtle penalties at work. The result? Women carry more of the caregiving load, men struggle to fully participate in family life, and Utah organizations lose out on the talent, innovation, and leadership they desperately need. In their new book Fair Share: How Men and Women Can Create a More Equitable Workplace Together, renowned gender‑in‑the‑workplace scholars W. Brad Johnson and David G. Smith argue that the system — not individual women or men — is the real barrier. And they offer a bold, research‑backed blueprint for leaders who are ready to fix it. 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
Special Event
Join the USU Department of Public Safety for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, held this year on the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, in honor of the 2,977 lives lost and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. Participants will climb in remembrance of those who were lost and in tribute to the courage, service, and sacrifice of the first responders who climbed to save others. Presented in collaboration with the USU Veterans Resource Office and the Logan City Fire Department. Registration opens at 5 p.m. The first 400 individuals to register will receive a T-shirt. Stair Climb begins at 6 p.m.

The exhibit features object stories of veterans and military families. In addition to this exhibit will be a companion exhibit “Paint the Desert: Memory, Identity, and Commemoration on the T-Walls of the Global War on Terror” by A.J. Arriola. Both exhibits will be available for viewing during LLC open hours: Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm. Beginning August 31, the LLC will be open Monday thru Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm and Sundays 4pm-9pm. The LLC would also like to extend an invitation for visitors to view the Carbon College WWII Memorial Roll, LLC room 108, that was dedicated in April 1946 in honor of the Carbon College students comprising of high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores who lost their lives in the war.
Run the Runway 5K

This race gives runners the unique opportunity of running on or next to one of the runways at the Logan-Cache airport. In addition, this race will provide funding for USU Aviation scholarships. You can also be a 'virtual' runner and donate any amount to the scholarship program and run where ever you are! Our goal is to raise s much as we can to fund multiple scholarships that will help our Aviation Students and find matching donors.

USU is hosting its second Back-to-School Bash, where builders from our club and the local community gather to start the school season off with a BANG! Celebrate a brand-new semester with the first dance presented by the USUSA Big Band Swing Dance Club! Come to the historic Elite Hall in Hyrum, Utah for vintage swing dancing! All skill levels welcome, instruction will be provided and people are available to help with a wide range of skill levels! There will be: - a Live Jazz Band - refreshments - a historic venue with a spring-loaded dance floor - and plenty of great vibes! Club personnel are willing to help throughout the whole event and provide individual instruction as best they can. There will also be a formal lesson taught from 7-7:30pm, after which the band will start playing and the dance floor will be open!

Come join the USUSA Big Band Swing Dance Club as we have a casual atmoshpere teaching and participating in vintage swing dance styles popular largely from the 1920s through the 1950s and beyond! No partner or experience required, though anyone is welcome to join! Instruction often is approximately the first 30 minutes, followed by opportunities for dancing, socializing, and asking questions!

A recently released report written by Dr. Susan R. Madsen notes, “sexual violence in Utah is not an anomaly… it is a patterned, predictable outcome of cultural norms, social systems, and power structures that shape how people understand gender, authority, and worth.” This webinar brings that reality into the light. Dr. Susan R. Madsen will be joined by Dr. Julie Valentine, one of Utah’s leading researchers on sexual assault and forensic nursing, as well as Liliana Olvera‑Arbon, the executive director of the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault. In addition, executive directors from direct serve providers throughout the state will also be invited to share their insights about the report and make recommendations on next steps.

USU Libraries is excited to announce a return to Logan Tabernacle for the annual Arrington Lecture. Associate Professor of History Benjamin E. Park from Sam Houston State University will present, "Declarations of Interdependence Why the Latter-day Saints Just Can't Quit the United States." Dr. Park is an award-winning historian with a commitment to public scholarship. He is the current president of the Mormon History Association, author or editor of five books including, "Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier" which won the Mormon History Association's Best Book Award, and "American Zion: A New History of Mormonism" which won the American Society of Church History's Philip Schaff Prize for the Best Book in the History of Christianity.

Featuring three works by Bunch and culminating in Dvorák’s exuberant E-flat Major String Quintet, this is a celebration of an instrument that may not always demand center stage—but, as it turns out, burns longer.

LAEP Speaker Series: Joe Diaz, Which Career Path in Landscape Architecture Will You Take?
Lecture/Readings
2026 Distinguished Alum Lecture Review of different career paths that are available for landscape architects; including experiences in working for a non-profit, private sector firms, and a large public sector agency. A discussion of challenges, successes, and opportunities for growth in all areas. Joe Diaz Jr. is a licensed landscape architect that has worked both in the private and public sector throughout his career. His primary focus has been on working with communities and developing spaces that encourage community connections, safe durable spaces, and maintaining the integrity of the surrounding environment. Early in his career, Joe contributed to a wide range of residential and public projects while working with PDSA and James Dalton and Associates. His work spanned multiple states, including California, Texas, South Carolina, Illinois, Nevada, Colorado, and Arizona. These developments integrated thoughtfully designed entry monuments, community parks, gathering spaces, fountains, lakes, and pedestrian connectivity. During this period, he also collaborated on many government park projects around the country further solidifying his commitment to public-facing design.

51st Annual Honors Last Lecture
Lecture/Readings
Dr. Benjamin Burger, 2026 Honors Outstanding Professor from the Department of Water, Earth, and Environmental Sciences in the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources, will deliver the 51st Annual Honors Last Lecture, “Beyond Extinction: The Prehistoric Past and Surviving the Future.” The lecture itself will explore stories about how we can use the fossil and rock record to understand both the fragility of life during times of dramatic change and the remarkable resilience of ecosystems through Earth’s history and talk about what it means for our shared future. Initiated in 1976, the Honors Last Lecture has become an important tradition for the Utah State University community. Each year, a committee of Honors students selects one Honors Outstanding Professor, whom they invite to deliver an imagined "Last Lecture," a talk that shares wisdom and insight with students and community members as if it were the professor's final chance to lecture at USU. A reception will follow in the lobby of the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall. The livestream for a statewide audience and the recording of the event after its completion can be accessed from the Honors Program website.

LAEP Speaker Series: Mike Johnson, Turns Out, Location Matters...A Lot!
Lecture/Readings
In 1854, John Snow, MD, used geographic analysis and maps to determine the primary source of the cholera epidemic in London. Public health spatial analysis was born. Much more recently, organizations across government, utilities, and private industry have discovered the positive impact of adopting a GIS-based location intelligence strategy using spatial analysis and maps to communicate potential outcomes. This session will offer some historical insight into early GIS in Utah and describe the current diversity of location intelligence applications through case studies. Examples represent stakeholder engagement, climate and environmental issues, transportation, and development challenges and will reference outcomes representing a strategy for balanced interaction between humans and the natural environment.

The opera adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland brings Alice’s whimsical journey to life through music, staging, and imaginative storytelling. Based on the beloved novel by Lewis Carroll, the opera follows Alice as she falls down a rabbit hole into a fantastical world filled with curious characters such as the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts. Through playful melodies, colorful costumes, and surreal scenes, the production captures the story’s sense of wonder, humor, and adventure while exploring themes of curiosity, imagination, and growing up.

Larry Smith Jazz Kicks Big Band

The Utah State University Music Department features The Legendary Larry Smith “Kicks Band” as it presents its Fall Concert playing the music of Sammy Nestico. This concert will present a full program focusing on the arrangements and original tunes of Sammy Nestico. Sammy Nestico has written and arranged over 300 selections and best known for known for his compositions and arrangements with the Count Basie Orchestra. From 1970 to 1984 he recorded ten original albums and won four Grammy Awards. His music will leave the audience with a great love of the big bands while focusing on rich melodies and familiar tunes in the various styles of swing, Latin, and funk. Some of the tunes performed that evening will include Wind Machine, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Fascinating Rhythm, Tangerine, Sweet Georgia Brown, I’m Beginning to See the Light, The Joy of Cookin’, and A Warm Breeze.
The Kicks Band features guest vocalist Terresa Shreve singing tunes such as That Ol’ Devil Moon and Tangerine, in the vocal stylings of Anita O’Day. Soloists for the evening will include Nik Clark, Danny Hankins, Kelin Gibbons, Greg Wheeler, Jared Saunders, Roger Karen, Brian Baird, and others. This Nesitco focus will include music everyone can enjoy. The concert will be held in the Russell/ Wanlass Performance Hall on the USU campus Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. Please join us for this legendary performance of big band music in this special setting.

Admired and sought-after for both its fresh interpretations of the classical music canon and its championing of works by twentieth- and twenty-first-century composers, the ensemble has been hailed for its “edge-of-the-seat performances,” by the Boston Globe, which called it “simply the best.”

Breaking the Cycle: ACEs, Trauma, and Utah’s Path to Healthier Children
Panel Discussion/Presentation
A research‑based conversation with Utah leaders/experts on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the impact of trauma, and new initiatives. Utah is taking a historic step to confront childhood trauma and its lifelong impact. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are linked to 9 of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S., and ACE data show that 65.7% of Utah adults have experienced at least one ACE, while 1 in 4 have experienced three or more. These early adversities shape mental health, physical health, educational outcomes, and long‑term economic stability. Childhood trauma — particularly sexual abuse — is far more common than many realize and often goes unnoticed or unaddressed. We’ll be joined by three leading experts — Dr. R. Neal Davis, Holly Willard, and Dr. Brooks Keeshin — who will explore the science, clinical realities, and community impact of ACEs and childhood trauma. After their discussion, Sage Hancock, Executive Director of GenerationAll, will close the webinar by introducing Utah’s Healing Generations initiative, the first statewide ACE screening pilot of its kind.

LAEP Speaker Series: Alonzo Coby, When Land Leads: Indigenous Planning for Community Futures
Lecture/Readings
This lecture explores applied approaches to Indigenous planning through real-world examples in place-making, cultural landscape interpretation, land justice, stewardship, and planning policy. The session highlights how Indigenous planning frameworks move beyond conventional land-use models to center ancestral relationships to land, language, ceremony, and systems of community governance. Rather than treating planning as a purely technical exercise, this work positions it as a vehicle for cultural continuity, self-determination, and nation-building.
Alonzo Coby serves as Planning Director for the Shoshone Bannock Tribes, where he advances sovereignty-centered planning grounded in cultural identity, land stewardship, and long-term community well-being. His work demonstrates how tribal planning functions not merely as a regulatory framework, but as a powerful instrument for nation-building, self-determination, and the protection of ancestral relationships to land, language, and ceremony.

MUSES

The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. LAEP Speaker Series: Huaqing Wang, Landscape Research and Design for Human Health
Lecture/Readings
This lecture introduces Huaqing Wang’s recent research on how built environments influence human health, and discusses how these insights translate into landscape and urban design studio teaching. The talk highlights ecological thinking and evidence-based design as bridges between research and pedagogy.
Huaqing Wang is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University, affiliated with the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Center and the Berryman Institute. She is also a licensed landscape architect and an AICP member. Her research integrates landscape ecology, human health, and data-driven methods to examine how urban green spaces influence health and equity, with work published in leading journals and featured in outlets such as Forbes and Medical News Today.

Join us in celebrating the remarkable talents and hard-earned skills of Utah State University’s music therapy seniors as they take the stage for their annual Senior Gala concert. This event will showcase the student's musicality, professionalism, and flexibility as they perform 1-2 pieces from a repertoire of 60 songs memorized for their fourth-level Clinical Qualifying Exam. Adding to the excitement, the concert program is unknown to the students in advance—performers and audience members discover each piece together in the moment. Chamber Music Society of Logan presents Akropolis Reed Quintet

Founded in 2009, the GRAMMY® Award-winning Akropolis Reed Quintet is “a sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity” (BBC Music Magazine). Comprising five reed players and entrepreneurs unbounded by limits or categorization, Akropolis has graced the Classical Billboard Charts with each of their last three albums, including #2 in April, 2024, and has won seven national chamber music prizes including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal. Having premiered and commissioned more than 200 works by living artists and composers, they are pioneers and champions of a new genre of classical music—the reed quintet.

FSQ at USU Series | When You Think You Can’t Go Further

The FSQ@USU 2026/27 Season opens with The Viola Burns Longer—a concert bursting with personality, creativity, and wit; continues with When You Think You Can’t Go Further, which pushes beyond the outer bounds of the quartet tradition; and closes with Memory, Longing, and What Extends Beyond, widening toward ecological memory, mortality, gratitude, and what survives us.

What can you program after late Beethoven?
The FSQ continues its journey toward a complete cycle of Beethoven’s late string quartets in fall 2028 with Op. 127—a work of extraordinary spaciousness, intimacy, and invention. And then: Enescu. Written when the composer was only nineteen, his monumental String Octet seems to ask how much farther eight string players can possibly go. Sweeping, youthful, virtuosic, and almost orchestral in scale, it is one of the rare works audacious enough to follow late Beethoven.
