USU General Education Changes

What Concurrent Enrollment Students Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Is anything changing for my CE courses right now?

No! All CE courses stay the same for 2025–2026 and 2026–2027. Your credits count exactly as they do now.

What's changing?

Starting in 2026–2027, new CIVC-prefix courses will be added as CE options, giving you new choices for Gen Ed requirements.

Will my credits still count?

Yes! If your CE course has a Gen Ed label (like CL, QL, or BSS), it will always count for that same General Education requirement.

What is a "Gen Ed designation" or "label"?

Every Gen Ed course has a short code that shows what requirement it meets. This designation is what matters most — not the course name or number. If your CE course has one of these codes, it will always count for that Gen Ed requirement — even years from now.

General Education Designation Codes:

  • CL = Communications Literacy
  • QL = Quantitative Literacy
  • BHU = Breadth Humanities
  • BSS = Breadth Social Science
  • BCA = Breadth Creative Arts
  • BPS = Breadth Physical Science
  • BLS = Breadth Life Science
  • BAI = Breadth American Institutions

Will my credits transfer to other Utah colleges?

Yes! Utah law requires Gen Ed courses from any Utah public college to transfer to others. Your USU CE Gen Ed credits will transfer and count the same way.

Will I have to retake a course?

No — not for Gen Ed. Your CE course with a Gen Ed designation will transfer and count at all Utah public colleges.

Example: You take a USU history course through CE that has the BAI (Breadth American Institutions) designation. It will transfer and count for the American Institutions Gen Ed requirement at any Utah public college. But if you become a History major, your new college might require a specific history course for the major itself. Your CE course would still count as elective credit.

Will I have new course choices?

Yes! Alongside the new CIVC courses, we're adding new USU CE courses and pathways, including expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways and introduction to major courses, giving you more ways to explore different majors and career paths.

What about CE classes that are not General Education?

Some CE courses are intro courses for specific majors (like Introduction to Education). These don't have Gen Ed labels. If your CE course does NOT have a Gen Ed label, the credits will always transfer to other Utah colleges, but whether they count toward a specific major depends on the college you attend and your major.

What about AP test scores?

AP credits still work the same way. The Utah System of Higher Education decides which Gen Ed credit an AP score earns — not individual colleges. Whether you use AP scores, current USU courses, or new CIVC courses, you can meet the same Gen Ed requirements.

What about private or out-of-state schools?

Transfer policies vary by school. We recommend that you check the transfer guide for the specific college you're interested in (most schools have these online and there is a link on our website) or contact their admissions office to ask how USU CE credits transfer. Many private and out-of-state schools accept USU credits, but each school has its own policies.
