Using Text to Speech and Proctorio

Below you will find instructions for using text to speech during Proctorio exams. Instructions are given for Natural Reader Chrome Extension on a Windows computer and VoiceOver on a Mac. If you are a Mac user, you must use VoiceOver.

Steps for using Natural Reader Chrome Extension on Windows with Proctorio

  1. Install the Natural Reader Chrome Extension.

  2. Open your exam as you normally would with Proctorio.
  3. After beginning the quiz:
    1. Click on the puzzle piece in the top right-hand corner (extensions) and click on Natural Reader

    2. This will activate the extension and a little play button will appear. (Do not actually click on the play button). Natural Reader extension activation Natural Reader extension play button
    3. Highlight the text you would like read, right click, and select read selection. text hilighted click Read Selection
    4. You can now hit the play/pause button if you want to stop that paragraph.
    5. If you want to move to a different paragraph, you will need to highlight the new paragraph, right click, and select read selection.
  4. Changing the voice: the automatic voice will only work for a certain amount of time before it wants you to pay. There are free versions available.
    1. Click on the person icon next to the play button.
    2. Select the language as English US.
    3. Scroll down to the bottom until the option of “free” is listed.

Troubleshooting: If you find that the text is not being read by following the above steps, follow the troubleshooting steps below. If you still can’t get it to work, contact the DRC at 435-797-2444.

  1. Deactivate the extension by:
    1. Clicking on the puzzle piece and selecting Natural Reader. This should make the play button disappear.
    2. Repeat the same process from step 3 (parts a-c) above.
      1. Click on the puzzle piece in the top right-hand corner (extensions) and click on Natural Reader.
      2. This will activate the extension and a little play button will appear.
      3. Highlight the text you would like read, right click, and select read selection.

This process will hopefully restart the system for it to properly read when you highlight the text, right click and select “read selection”. If you have further questions, please contact the DRC.

Steps for using Voice Over and Proctorio for Mac

  1. Begin your Proctorio Exam.
  2. Navigate to the Mac System Settings.
  3. Search for VoiceOver.
  4. Toggle the VoiceOver button ON.
  5. A gray bar will now appear in the middle of your screen.
  6. Hover over the line of text you would like to have read. The text being read will appear in the gray bar.
