Literature as a Lens: Teaching Assessment to Preservice Teachers

Abstract

This presentation explores a book study where preservice teachers use a children’s novel to learn assessment practices. Students analyze a character through reading circles, develop an assessment plan, and create an assessment report. Participants will learn the implementation steps and data creation process and hear student feedback about the project.

Summer is a Professional Practice Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at Utah State University. She is primarily responsible for supervising and instructing pre-service teachers seeking a license in early childhood special education. She has extensive experience in course design and community-engaged learning activities.
