Meeting the Digital Expectations of Gen Z: YouTubing Your Boring Asynchronous Lecture

Abstract
This presentation will review the disconnect between traditional asynchronous lectures and the digital savviness of the average Gen Z student. The presenter will introduce a program called "Storyblocks" and provide real examples of lectures using this online tool. As a group, the audience will assist in editing an uncut lecture to enhance quality of the lesson, while being visually appealing to students. Finally, the presenter will share his experience with the program and plans to evaluate the changes made through Storyblocks in a graduate research course.

Jeffrey Spears
Associate Professor
Dr. Jeff Spears is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at Utah State University. He completed his MSW degree at the University of Kansas in 2011 and PhD in Social Work at the University of Utah in 2018. Dr. Spears teaches social policy and seminar class for the past 3 years. He is a part-time therapist at Pinnacle High School in Price, Utah serving individuals and families. Dr. Spears serves on the Carbon and Emery Opioid Coalition Board and involved with the Hope Squad focused on suicide prevention. His research interests include community organizing, cyptocurrencies, and undergraduate mentorship. Dr. Spears currently serves on the steering committee and coordinator for the faculty-to-student mentorship program at USU.
