Socratic Dialogue Assignments for Engaged Learning with AI

Abstract
This session presents a practical approach to using AI as a partner in Socratic dialogue assignments. Rather than supplying quick answers, AI supports students in questioning, probing, and reflecting—deepening reasoning, questioning assumptions, and sharpening conceptual understanding. The assignments are structured with guiding questions, staged dialogues, and reflective synthesis to encourage habits of inquiry for learning and critical oversight of AI. Participants will explore how these assignments are designed, how they promote active engagement, and how the framework can be adapted across disciplines, highlighting both pedagogical benefits and strategies for aligning AI-mediated dialogue with course learning goals.

Logan Haviland is a Ph.D. student in the Applied Economics Department. He teaches various undergraduate courses focused on economic institutions, fundamental economic principles, and analytical methods. He loves helping students gain important learning skills, along with ways of thinking and viewing the world in new ways to benefit society and their communities.
