Using NotebookLM to Enhance Student Learning
In-Person
Abstract
This interactive workshop demonstrates practical applications of Google NotebookLM, an AI-powered research and learning tool, in education. Participants will explore how NotebookLM can transform student engagement with course materials, particularly for term projects that require analyzing and presenting news articles or academic papers.
The session showcases specific use cases in economic courses including: creating AI-generated study aids (flashcards, quizzes, and study guides) from lecture slides and readings; helping students prepare for article and paper presentations through automatic summarization and key concept extraction; generating audio overviews that make complex economic concepts more accessible; and producing infographics and visual summaries of economic data and theories.
Attendees will receive hands-on guidance on implementing NotebookLM in their courses, designing student tutorials, and establishing best practices for ethical AI use. The workshop emphasizes intentional technology integration that enhances rather than replaces deep learning, aligning with the conference theme of thoughtful teaching in the age of AI.
