USU provides benefited employees with vacation, sick, and bereavement leave, and supports the Family Medical Leave Act for all employees.
Vacation Leave
Vacation leave is provided for all benefitted employees at USU and is based on their employee category.
Faculty & Exempt Staff
Leave is earned at the rate of 1.83 days per month or 22 days per year for eligible faculty and exempt staff on fiscal year appointments (12 months). Academic year appointments do not earn vacation leave. Vacation leave accrues on a calendar basis and may not exceed 30 days.
Non-Exempt Staff
Vacation leave accrues on a calendar basis and may not exceed 30 days.
Vacation leave is earned based on years of service (see table).
Service Years | Leave Accrued |
---|---|
Less than 5 years | 12 days/year |
5 to 10 years | 18 days/year |
More than 10 years | 22 days/year |
Sick Leave
Sick Leave is accrued at the rate of one day per month or 12 days per year. This accrual rate is the same for faculty and staff (regardless of exemption).
Recording Leave
Employees record and submit leave and exception time in MyTime.
Leave Corrections
Review and follow the instructions for correcting leave in MyTime. If you have any issues, please contact the Leave Manager for your department.
Holiday Leave
All employees on fiscal year base appointments earn 12 paid holidays per year. Employees are eligible for paid holidays that fall within the period in which their services are performed.
Leave Accruals
Holiday, sick and vacation leave pay is pro-rated for employees with an FTE less than 100%.
FMLA: Family Medical Leave Act
An eligible employee may use paid leave (if available) and/or unpaid leave up to a maximum of 12 weeks during a rolling 12-month period for specific reasons.
Military Leave
For more information on military leave at USU, please see Policy 359.
Bereavement Leave
Employees will be granted up to three working days of leave if an immediate family member dies. See Policy 369 for more information regarding bereavement leave.
Parental Caregiving with Modified Duties
The PCMD program is available to faculty who meet the eligibility requirements and obtain administrative approval. Administrative approval may be granted after determining that the PCMD leave request is in the mutual best interest of the faculty member and the University. PCMD leave is a privilege granted at the University’s discretion.
Parental caregiving with modified duties (PCMD) is designed to allow all faculty to request relief of up to six credit hours of teaching for one semester either spring or fall due to the birth or adoption of a child, while continuing to perform other job responsibilities. The faculty member will be expected to continue professional activities such as research and working with graduate students. Fulfilling these expectations will prevent students from being disadvantaged by the disruption of instruction and grading that might be caused by having an instructor take time off during the middle of a semester. This policy is designed to be used in either fall or spring semesters. PCMD will run concurrently with FMLA leave (Policy 351 Family and Medical Leave) if applicable. No intermittent leave may be used for PCMD. For more information, please see Policy 366.
