Summary
Incumbents in the Assistant Foreman position coordinate and oversee assignments to maintain, repair, and sustain the aesthetic and functional qualities of USU facilities.
Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities
This classification trains and oversees personnel, including hiring, firing, performance evaluations, work allocation, and problem resolution. Incumbents will report to a variety of upper level management titles, depending on work unit.
Typical Functions
- Ensures relevant policies, procedures, and laws are implemented.
- Manages the budget to meet established guidelines.
- Prioritizes expenditures and assists in the preparation of capital and operations budgets.
- Develops, informs, and trains new and existing employees on new work methods and procedures, safety regulations, work policies, codes, and standards.
- Assists in monitoring employee work schedules, ensuring appropriate staffing levels are maintained.
- Enforces proper care and safe use of the equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Analyzes technical problems and decides course of action for repair.
- Performs direct labor as a working member of the shop team.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

- Skilled in mathematical computations.

- Exceptional customer service skills, including resolving complaints and/or concerns.
- Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and material common to the shop trade.
- Knowledge of budget planning.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Ability to supervise and train staff.
- Ability to monitor and maintain quality control standards.
- Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, codes, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.

- Ability to assess operational requirements and to plan and organize workflow patterns and schedules.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of experience in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This position requires moderate physical effort. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting up to 25 pounds, walking and standing. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
