Summary

Incumbents in the Carpenter Senior position coordinate projects; direct teams as assigned by the Foreman; and perform complex carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of campus facilities. The incumbent applies journeyman skills; a positive attitude; advanced technical knowledge; the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests and customer concerns; and leadership skills to accomplish assigned tasks.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Carpenter Senior is distinguished from the Carpenter Journeyman in that incumbents in the Senior level possess the knowledge and experience to perform more complex and technical duties without direct supervision. Additionally, the Carpenter Senior has more responsibility to direct and guide less senior technicians.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Carpenter Senior reports to a Foreman. This classification trains and guides less senior technicians.

Typical Functions

  1. Prepares labor and material estimates for repair and renovation projects.
  2. Assists in monitoring, ordering, and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment.
  3. Coordinates and schedules projects to ensure timely completion and quality standards.
  4. Performs customer service duties, including contacting customers and following up to ensure that expectations were met.
  5. Coordinates and participates in meetings and committees to enhance and develop the Facilities Department and its resources.
  6. Repairs and maintains a myriad of structural parts, including floors, windows, ceilings, roofs, walls, partitions, stairways, etc.
  7. Performs duties associated with a variety of new construction and remodeling, including insulation, cabinets, shelves, wood or metal frame walls, suspended ceilings, roofing, masonry, concrete work, etc.
  8. Performs finish work, including trimming, fitting and installing windows and doors, paneling, attaching hinges and catches, laying laminate and ceramic tile counters, etc.
  9. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  10. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  11. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  12. Prepares drawings and sketches for construction projects.
  13. Completes trainings, as warranted, to stay current with the trade.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Skilled in the repair, maintenance, and construction techniques common to the carpentry trade.
  2. Skilled in estimating time and material requirements for assigned projects.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  4. Skilled with mathematical computations.
  5. Ability to read specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  6. Ability to build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  7. Ability to work without supervision.
  8. Skilled in use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  9. Basic computer skills.
  10. Skilled at troubleshooting problems.
  11. Customer service skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of experience in a carpentry trade is required. Incumbents must possess journeyman skills and/or a license.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
