Summary

Incumbents in the Central Energy Plant Technician (CEP) series maintain, repair, and install energy plant equipment and distribution/production systems. Incumbents apply entry-level skills, follow instructions and established guidelines, and work as a team member to complete tasks.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The CEP Technician Apprentice reports to a Foreman. This classification does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions

  1. Installs, repairs, and maintains machinery, equipment, physical structures, pipe, and electrical systems in commercial or industrial establishments.
  2. Installs, repairs, and maintains chilled water, steam and condensation return, water, gas, sewers, and other piping systems as related to the production and distribution of utilities.
  3. Installs and repairs electrical apparatus, such as transformers and wiring; and electrical and electronic components of machinery and equipment.
  4. Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. Repairs and replaces gauges, valves, and pressure regulators.
  5. Inspects joints, valves, pumps, boilers, and other utility mechanical system components to locate malfunctions; repairs or replaces as necessary.
  6. Designs, fabricates, joins and/or repairs equipment, piping and various types of metals and structures using oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, MIG and TIC welding techniques.
  7. Develops and studies plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs or replacement as required.
  8. Dismantles defective machines/equipment and installs new or repaired parts.
  9. Responds to emergencies on an on-call basis.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of steam (natural gas, chilled water, condensation) distribution and production principles.
  2. Knowledge of welding techniques, tools and equipment.
  3. Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and utility piping systems.
  4. Skilled in the design, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, equipment and structures.
  5. Ability to estimate time and material requirements for work projects.
  6. Ability to troubleshoot problems with mechanical equipment, plumbing, utilities, and distribution systems.
  7. Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  8. Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
  9. Ability to work without supervision.
  10. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and to design projects from blueprints.
  11. Basic computer skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
