Summary

Incumbents in the Culinarian I position assist cafeteria staff with food preparation, customer service, and sanitation of the kitchen and Dining Halls

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Culinarian I reports to the Chef de Cuisine and/or Executive Chef. This classification typically has no supervisory responsibilities, but may offer guidance to hourly and/or student employees.

Typical Functions


  1. Performs food preparation and cooking in the Dining Hall as directed by the culinary staff.
  2. Cleans personal work space as part of the culinary responsibilities (clean as you go) and ensures the nightly and weekly cleaning of the Dining Hall and kitchen.
  3. Works catered events as needed.
  4. May be required to participate in the deep cleaning and sanitizing of kitchens and other Dining Services facilities.
  5. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to prepare and execute menu items to specification.
  2. Ability to follow recipes and presentation specifications.
  3. Ability to maintain a clean station by being well organized and practicing safety and sanitation guidelines.
  4. Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure.
  5. Ability to take direction.
  6. Ability to work evenings and weekends as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude plus a current food handler’s permit or the ability to obtain one is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting. This position requires nearly continuous standing, repetitive hand motions, and reaching overhead. Employees may be exposed to unusual elements including extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
