Summary

Incumbents in the Design Assistant position provide graphic, multimedia, and/or instructional design services as well as administrative support to a college and/or department.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Design Assistant reports to an Instructional Designer or Manager. This classification has no supervisory responsibility

Typical Functions


  1. Creates and designs pamphlets, flyers, posters, programs, reports, and newsletters.
  2. Documents, via video and photography, research activities, events, etc.
  3. Edits film and photos for use by college and departments.
  4. Creates and edits power point presentations as assigned.
  5. May work with faculty to create instructional materials.
  6. Manages instructional design projects.
  7. May maintain webpages for colleges, departments, and/or programs.
  8. May conduct training workshops.
  9. Maintains multimedia equipment.
  10. Establishes and maintains strong relationships with customers to ensure timely, effective support and efficient delivery of multimedia services.
  11. Performs audio mixing and recording.
  12. May perform general office duties, including scheduling, answering calls and emails, and assisting students, faculty, and staff.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design.
  2. Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment.
  3. Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures.
  4. Knowledge of software applications for authoring, training design, and web-based development.
  5. Ability to work within a course management system.
  6. Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  7. Knowledge of printing and/or reproduction processes and techniques.
  8. Proofreading and editing skills.
  9. Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
  10. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
