Summary

Incumbents in the Education Specialist position develop curricula, prepare relevant presentations and materials, and organize, deliver, and/or facilitate classes, labs, conferences, and/or workshops. The Educational Specialist is a staff position.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Education Specialist I reports to a Department Head or Director. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions


  1. Plans and designs curricula for the assigned educational program.
  2. Researches and designs educational goals, objectives, and methodologies to meet program goals.
  3. Presents educational materials in the classroom, lab, and/or at conferences and workshops.
  4. May present course material as requested in a non-credit course.
  5. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  2. Knowledge of academic and/or vocational curricula.
  3. Records maintenance skills.
  4. Skilled in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  5. Program planning and implementation skills.
  6. Ability to manage and facilitate educational programs

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
