Summary

Incumbents in the Education Specialist position develop curricula, prepare relevant presentations and materials, and organize, deliver, and/or facilitate classes, labs, conferences, and/or workshops. The Educational Specialist is a staff position.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Education Specialist II is distinguished from the Education Specialist I in that incumbents in the II level perform duties in a larger program and/or department, participate in the evaluation and analysis of curriculum resources, and may teach non-credit courses on a recurring basis.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Education Specialist II reports to a Department Head or Director. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions


  1. Develops online modules for educators and students.
  2. Researches, develops, and tests research-based, pedagogically sound educational materials.
  3. Designs and creates promotional materials.
  4. Engages in research.
  5. Edits lesson plans and educational resources for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  6. Develops lesson plans and companion resources.
  7. Evaluates and analyzes curriculum resources based upon Google Analytics, gap analyses, teacher feedback, and the online Matrix laboratory.
  8. Reviews and recommends books and other educational materials.
  9. Updates content on website.
  10. May teach classes and labs as requested in a non-credit course.
  11. Proctors and grades tests, quizzes, and exercises as needed.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  2. Knowledge of academic and/or vocational curricula.
  3. Records maintenance skills.
  4. Skilled in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  5. Program planning and implementation skills.
  6. Ability to manage and facilitate educational programs.
  7. Knowledge of educational methods and teaching strategies related to classroom activities.
  8. Knowledge of current trends in education, including familiarity with national education standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field plus two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
