Summary

Incumbents in the Electrical Technician series install, repair, and maintain electrical systems of various voltages for campus buildings and properties.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Electrical Technician Apprentice reports to a Foreman. This classification does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions


  1. Installs electrical systems for remodeling and commercial projects.
  2. Repairs and maintains campus lighting in buildings, walkways, parking lots, roadways, etc.
  3. Performs preventive maintenance on all electrical systems and equipment.
  4. Assists with high voltage installations, repairs, and maintenance.
  5. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  6. Promotes continuous improvements of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  7. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  8. Adheres to safety precautions and uses safety equipment.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  2. Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  3. Knowledge of safe work practices.
  4. Ability to understand and follow directions without close supervision.
  5. Ability to measure, cut thread, pull, and install electrical conduit.
  6. Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  7. Basic knowledge of electrical, safety, and fire codes.
  8. Basic computer skills.
  9. Skilled in troubleshooting and repairing various types of electrical circuitry.
  10. Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
  11. Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees occasionally work outdoors, may not be protected from weather conditions or contaminants, and may be exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations.
