Summary

Incumbents in the Environmental Technician position support efforts to identify, evaluate, prevent, and control contamination of the environment. Incumbents may inspect and maintain equipment, control and manage hazardous waste, collect samples, assist with regulatory compliance, and other duties as assigned. Work may be performed in a lab environment and/or in the field

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Environmental Technician may report to an Environmental Health and Safety Officer. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions

1. May collect hazardous and biological waste and prepare waste for disposal pick up.
2. May ensure proper segregation and storage of hazardous chemicals in an EPA approved 90 day storage facility.
3. Cleans up, gathers, and contains spills.
4. Maintains and repairs equipment and facilities.
5. Conducts regular inventory counts. Purchases supplies and equipment as needed.
6. May conduct calibration/verification on equipment as necessary.
7. Maintains records/databases for documentation and audits.
8. May research and prepare guidelines and rules for implementation of control standards and practices.
9. Ensures that environmental issues comply with legal and waste management requirements.
10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

3. Knowledge of University, state, and federal procedures, rules, and regulations.
4. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
5. Ability to operate, test, and/or repair monitoring, sampling, and/or analytical equipment and instruments.
6. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires considerable physical activity, including the handling of heavy weight objects up to 50 pounds and/or standing or walking more than five hours per day. Employees are exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
