Summary

Incumbents in the Equipment Operator series operate a variety of heavy equipment including front end loaders, backhoes, track-hoes, dozers, road-graders, and fork lifts. Incumbents dig underground electrical, water, and steam lines, and prepare sites for projects. Incumbents install, maintain, and repair underground and culinary water systems.

Typical Functions


  1. Installs and repairs 4” and larger irrigation lines.
  2. Uses heavy equipment to dig underground electrical, water, and steam lines.
  3. Installs and repairs underground water and culinary water systems.
  4. Operates heavy equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, and other related assignments.
  5. Performs snow removal for University streets and parking lots.
  6. Performs preventive maintenance on culinary valves and storm drains.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  8. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  9. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  10. Responds to emergency on-call situations.
  11. Performs other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  2. Knowledge of light and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  3. Skilled with hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes.
  5. Skilled at record maintenance.
  6. Basic computer skills.
  7. Customer service skills.
  8. Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of utility piping systems.
  9. Skilled in the design, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, equipment, and structures.
  10. Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings.
  11. Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance, including tire pressure, checking oil, and water levels.
  12. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  13. Ability to work without supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of directly related work experience in utility maintenance/equipment operation is required. Possession of Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.

Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, elevated work spaces, such as scaffolding, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
