Summary

Incumbents in the Finishes Technician series install, maintain, and repair a diverse array of floor coverings and/or apply paint to walls, ceilings, and furniture. Incumbents work as a member of a team to complete tasks.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Finishes Technician Apprentice reports to a Foreman. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities

Typical Functions


  1. Prepares surfaces for floor coverings installation. Removes current floor covering including, sweeping, scraping, sanding, or chipping of dirt and irregularities from base surfaces.
  2. Fills cracks and patches on uneven surfaces to form a smooth, clean foundation.
  3. Assists senior technicians by carrying, moving, and positioning materials, equipment, and tools.
  4. Prepares surfaces before painting: removes nails, washes area, scrapes, sands, applies putty, patches holes, applies mudding, tapes, etc.
  5. Hangs wallpaper and applies other decorative finish elements.
  6. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  8. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  9. Assists in work in other areas of the shop, such as painting, upholstery, and signage.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
  2. Knowledge of different types of floor covering and installation and repair techniques.
  3. Knowledge of repair process for walls and surfaces.
  4. Ability to select and apply paint.
  5. Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
  6. Ability to take direction from supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude is required. Aptitude is defined as passing the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA), with a score of 70% or higher.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment
