Summary

Incumbents in the Finishes Technician series install, maintain, and repair a diverse array of floor coverings and/or apply paint to walls, ceilings, and furniture. Incumbents work as a member of a team to complete tasks.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Finishes Technician Journeyman is distinguished from the Finishes Technician Apprentice in that incumbents in the Journeyman level have the knowledge and experience to perform a broader range of assignments with less supervision.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Finishes Technician Journeyman reports to a Foreman. This classification may train and guide hourly and/or student employees.

Typical Functions

1. Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of floor coverings, including carpeting, rubber, vinyl, composite, tile, wood, laminate, urethane, etc.
2. Prepares basic layouts for floor coverings.
3. Measures and cuts covering material according to blueprints and sketches.
4. Prepares surfaces for floor coverings installation. Removes current floor covering including, sweeping, scraping, sanding, or chipping of dirt and irregularities from base surfaces.
5. Prepares surfaces before painting: removes nails, washes area, scrapes, sands, applies putty, patches holes, applies mudding, tapes, etc.
6. Hangs wallpaper and applies other decorative finish elements.
7. Operates equipment, such as spray equipment, striping machine, scaffolding, and motorized lifts.
8. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
9. Completes building audits for assigned locations to evaluate the condition of floor coverings and identify any repairs that are required.
10. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
11. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
12. Assists in work in other areas of the shop, such as upholstery, and signage.
13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
2. Knowledge of different types of floor covering and installation and repair techniques.
3. Knowledge of repair process for walls and surfaces.
4. Ability to select and apply paint.
5. Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
6. Basic computer skills.
7. Skilled in employing a myriad of floor covering methods and techniques.
8. Skilled in evaluating jobs and determining the appropriate action to take and materials to use

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of experience in Painting, Flooring, or Signage is required. Incumbents must possess journeyman skills and/or a license.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment
