Summary

Incumbents in the HVAC Technician series install, maintain, and repair campus heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and controls. 

Distinguishing Characteristics

The HVAC Technician Senior is distinguished from the HVAC Technician Journeyman in that incumbents in the Senior level perform duties requiring more responsibility, expertise, knowledge, and experience; and provide guidance and training to less senior technicians.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The HVAC Technician Senior reports to a Foreman.  This classification trains and guides less senior technicians.

Typical Functions

  1. Participates in major HVAC component installation and replacement as well as the evaluation of complex system problems.
  2. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  3. Performs troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of HVAC mechanical systems campus wide.
  4. Performs scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and components.
  5. Maintains and services department specialized equipment on request.
  6. Identifies and repairs HVAC mechanical problems; schedules with customer to meet their needs.
  7. Maintains records, including disposal of hazardous materials and treatment chemicals, work orders, time cards, and billing.
  8. Utilizes laser alignment equipment to align belts and other mechanical equipment.
  9. Understands fan performance curves and is able to make calculated adjustments to equipment to meet customer needs.
  10. Assists in the review of plans and specifications for new mechanical systems and equipment.
  11. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  12. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and installation techniques common to the HVAC trade.
  2. Ability to use computer-based monitoring and control devices in maintaining and troubleshooting HVAC mechanical systems.
  3. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment and associated components.
  4. Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment and control systems.
  5. Skilled in troubleshooting and repairing all types of HVAC systems, equipment, and elements.
  6. Ability to analyze building heating and air-conditioning requirements and recommend systems or modifications.
  7. Skilled in the use of test equipment common to trade.
  8. Knowledge of various testing equipment and techniques.
  9. Ability to accurately estimate projects and purchase materials.
  10. Ability to read and interpret blueprints for designing projects.
  11. Ability to use various hand and power tools common to trade.
  12. Excellent customer service skills.
  13. Ability to work with limited supervision.
  14. Knowledge of testing equipment and techniques.
  15. Ability to complete trainings to stay current with the trade.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of directly related work experience in HVAC/refrigeration trade is required. 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
