Summary

Incumbents in the IT Manager position lead, organize, assign responsibilities, and work as an integral member of the overall IT organization to plan, design, prioritize, develop, implement, operate, and collaborate.  They oversee, provide vision, and are responsible for the discovery, prioritization, implementation, and operation of all activities and processes within each team.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The IT Manager reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) on fiscal, personnel, and policy issues related to the specific functions of their assigned team and services.

Typical Functions

  1. Ensures compliance with policies and regulations.
  2. Serves as a liaison and relationship/project manager with University personnel, constituent groups, and administration in the performance of project, platform, service, or system duties.
  3. Assigns and prioritizes routine and non-routine projects to team members.
  4. Builds and maintains collaborative relationships inside and outside of IT.
  5. Collaborates with team members in balancing workload and leave.
  6. Manages team members by providing opportunities for growth and development, coordinating daily efforts, setting clear assignments and expectations, and evaluating performance.
  7. Recommends staff changes to CIO.
  8. Coordinates, recommends, and approves regular business matters involving the team, including travel, procurement, time entry, personnel actions, etc.
  9. Makes decisions of a technical nature after receiving team input and, where appropriate, the CIO, about how to best satisfy customer needs.
  10. Develops and employs effective project management practices in communicating with technical workers and business process owners to ensure projects are appropriately and safely defined in scope, time and resources.
  11. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field plus five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
