Summary

Incumbents in the Landscaper series install, repair, and maintain the landscaping and grounds on the USU campus, including snow removal. 

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Landscaper I reports to the Landscaper Lead, but may receive training and direction from the Landscapers II and III.  This classification does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions

1. Plants and maintains trees, shrubs, flower beds, etc.
2. Applies pesticides to rid grounds of pests, such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks, and others.
3. Applies fertilizers.
4. Prunes trees, trims shrubs, and pulls weeds.
5. Rakes and mulches the grounds as needed.
6. Mows and trims lawns.
7. Removes snow from sidewalks, approaches, and parking lots.
8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Skilled in performing routine manual labor.
2. Ability to operate landscape maintenance equipment.
3. Knowledge of plant materials and their cultural requirements.
4. Knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides used in grounds care and gardening.
5. Skilled in operating snow removal equipment.
6. Ability to diagnose plant conditions and cultural needs and recommend treatment options.
7. Knowledge of irrigation equipment and methods.
8. Knowledge of soil types, slope, and drainage.
9. Ability to communicate with co-workers and customers.
10. Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
11. Ability to work as a member of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

Aptitude is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting.  Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.  

Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, elevated work spaces, such as scaffolding, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
