Summary
Assists library operations in an assigned area of the library. The position reports to a library supervisor, manager, faculty member, or administrator and may have work directed by a coordinator position. Under direct supervision, this position will provide routine services assisting patrons and library staff. It will handle basic issues and problems and refer more complex issues to higher-level staff.
Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities
This position reports to a library supervisor/coordinator, manager, faculty member, or administrator. This classification does not supervise any employees.
Essential Functions
- May assist patrons in the use of library resources and materials.
- May perform clerical duties including data entry, filing and general maintenance for assigned area.
- May process, edit, and revise routine data pertaining to library materials and borrowers.
- May perform routine procedures to physically arrange or process library materials.
- May provide service at information or collection access points such as the Information desk, Special Collections and Archives Reading Room, and Circulation Desk.
- May perform routine office communication functions including delivery of mail, answering telephones, directing questions to appropriate parties, and communicating via chat services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of or ability to learn library related computer programs.
- Computer skills, including Word, Excel, and web browsers.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, students, faculty, staff, and public patrons.
- Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise judgement.
- Excellent customer services skills.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of library-related or office experience or post-secondary education is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees nearly continuously sit, hear, listen, and talk. Often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing) and walking.
