Library Supervisor

Summary

Primarily responsible for directly supervising hourly employees. The position may have additional, secondary responsibilities for library operations. The position reports to a library manager, faculty member, or administrator.  Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff. Contributes to the implementation of library policies, procedures, and library workflows or services. May have additional responsibilities for serving on or leading collaborative groups outside of its unit or program.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

This position reports to a library manager, faculty member, or administrator.  This classification supervises hourly staff and may supervise library assistants, as needed.

Typical Functions

  1. Hires, trains, and supervises hourly staff. May supervise benefited staff.
  2. Coordinates and ensures quality of service delivery through appropriate staff scheduling, training, assessment, and internal communication.
  3. Manages workload priorities for oneself and team members, ensuring the timely completion of scheduled and assigned tasks within established guidelines.
  4. Records, compiles, and manages production statistics for assigned areas.
  5. May serve as a principal liaison between students, faculty, staff, other departments, and/or external constituents.
  6. May create or participate in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures.
  7. May provide instruction, liaison services and/or consultation to students, faculty, and/or staff.
  8. May perform more complex office management duties, including managing schedules/calendars, scheduling meetings, creating, and processing forms, and keeping records as appropriate.
  9. May coordinate the day-to-day management of supplies, equipment, and facilities for the area.
  10. May track general financial expenditures or calculate and prepare general budget reports.
  11. May create and maintain basic statistical data, reports, and databases.
  12. May be responsible for serving on or leading collaborative groups outside of the unit or program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of or ability to learn library related computer programs.
  2. Computer skills, including Word, Excel, and web browsers.
  3. Records maintenance skills.
  4. Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  5. Database management skills.
  6. Ability to meet deadlines.
  7. Effective communication skills with the ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, patrons, and external stakeholders.
  8. Effective problem-solving skills to assist patrons and stakeholders.
  9. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise judgment.
  10. Ability to make procedural decisions and judgments.
  11. Knowledge or ability to train in the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree; or an associate degree plus two years of experience in a library; or four years of experience in a library.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees nearly continuously sit, hear, listen, and talk. Often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing) and walking.
