Summary

Performs essential functions in library services or operations in an assigned area of the library. The position reports to a library manager, faculty member, or administrator and may have work directed by a coordinator position. Will handle moderately complex issues and problems and refer more complex issues to higher-level staff. Contributes to the development of library procedures and library workflows or services in assigned area. May have additional responsibilities for serving on collaborative groups outside of its unit or program.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

This position reports to a library manager, faculty member, or administrator.  This classification may supervise hourly staff.

Typical Functions

  1. Under general supervision, responsibilities will focus on essential functions in key library operations and services such as acquisitions, building management, circulation, collection management, copy cataloging, digital repositories, document delivery, government information, interlibrary loan, open educational resources, stacks management, etc.
  2. Contributes to the review, adaptation, and documentation of changes to processes and services.
  3. Contributes to the assessment of library processes in area assigned.
  4. May troubleshoot and ensure functionality of library resources, services, or space.
  5. May administer routine database maintenance within established guidelines.
  6. May participate in the development and implementation of procedures.
  7. May coordinate the day-to-day management of supplies, equipment, and facilities for the area.
  8. May provide basic training or instruction to students, faculty, and/or staff in the use of specialized services.
  9. May perform routine office management duties, including managing schedules/calendars, scheduling meetings, creating, and processing forms, and keeping records as appropriate.
  10. May hire, train, and supervise hourly employees.
  11. May create and maintain basic statistical data, reports, and databases.
  12. May be responsible for serving on collaborative groups outside of the unit or program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of or ability to learn library related computer programs.
  2. Computer skills, including Word, Excel, and web browsers.
  3. Ability to meet deadlines.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with colleagues, students, faculty, staff, and public patrons.
  5. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise judgement.
  6. Knowledge or ability to train in the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree; or two years of experience in a library.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees nearly continuously sit, hear, listen, and talk. Often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing) and walking.
