Summary

Incumbents in the Locksmith series ensure the security of campus buildings and equipment by performing locksmith services for University departments, including installing, maintaining, and repairing access controls, locks, key systems, and door hardware.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Locksmith Journeyman is distinguished from the Locksmith Apprentice in that incumbents in the Journeyman level work with less supervision and are expected to possess the knowledge and experience to perform more complex tasks.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Locksmith Journeyman reports to a Foreman.  This classification trains and guides less senior technicians.

Typical Functions

  1. Maintains records and access controls for the lock shop; ensures that records are accurate and current.
  2. Installs locks and locking mechanisms.
  3. Cuts, duplicates, programs, and issues keys or proximity cards as requested by campus departments and in coordination with a supervisor and University police.
  4. Assists in the maintenance and repair of locks, locking mechanisms, and other security devices.
  5. Performs the combinating of cylinder pinning.
  6. Interprets keying guidelines; uses appropriate discretion and knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the University’s master key system while also meeting customer requests.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  8. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  9. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  10. Assist carpenters with basic carpentry tasks.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of keys, keyways, key manufacturers, key duplication machines, and key duplication techniques.
  2. Knowledge of function, grades, and the methods of installation and locking hardware.
  3. Basic computer skills.
  4. Records maintenance skills.
  5. Ability to work with tolerances of 1/1000th of an inch.
  6. Ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install, and repair locks and hardware.
  7. Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  8. Ability to learn through observation and hands on experience.
  9. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers.
  11. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  12. Ability to learn key codes and master keying techniques.
  13. Ability to participate in post-employment training and education to stay current with trade.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of directly related work experience in locksmithing is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting average-weight objects (up to 25 lbs.). Employees must adhere to safety precautions.
