Summary

Incumbents in the Machinist position maintain, install, and repair equipment and systems and perform complex work in the design, fabrication, and repair of a variety of equipment, parts, tools, machines, and devices. Incumbents are able to analyze requests, devise a plan, and execute unique projects as requested.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Machinist reports to a Foreman. This classification may provide technical guidance and direction to less senior employees.

Typical Functions

  1. Develops and studies plans, drawings, and specifications to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs or replacement as required for major projects.
  2. Performs cutting, fabrication, and welding for all types of metals and alloys.
  3. Designs and produces precision parts with lathes, milling machines, and other shop equipment.
  4. Prepares labor and materials estimates for projects.
  5. Orders materials and parts for efficient and effective job completion.
  6. May operate boilers and auxiliary equipment and control the generation of steam, chilled water and electricity; compresses air with programmable logic controllers or desktop computer based controls.
  7. Operates, cleans, and performs preventive maintenance on various kinds of equipment and tools.
  8. Monitors various gauges and automatic recording devices to assess operating conditions; records operational data.
  9. Inspects and tests systems and equipment to locate malfunctions; makes repairs and replaces as necessary.
  10. Maintains various records.
  11. May provide technical guidance and direction to less senior employees.
  12. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  13. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  14. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  15. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the trade.
  2. Skilled in the design, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals piping, equipment, and structures.
  3. Knowledge of equipment and systems specific to department.
  4. Skilled in the installation, maintenance, and repair of systems and equipment specific to department.
  5. Knowledge of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  6. Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  7. Skilled in estimating time and material requirements for work projects.
  8. Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  9. Basic computer skills.
  10. Skilled in cutting, fitting, and welding or assembling various types of metals.
  11. Knowledge of metallurgy, plastics, synthetic materials, and other materials used in machine work and welding.
  12. Knowledge of welding techniques, tools, and equipment.
  13. Skilled in the fabrication, modification, and repair of equipment and machines.
  14. Ability to solve technical problems.
  15. Ability to test systems and log results.
Minimum Qualifications

Four years of work experience in a related field is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
