Summary
Incumbents in the Manager series plan, direct, and oversee the operations and budget of a University department or unit. They oversee and lead the work of a team of employees representing at least two different skills.
Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities
The Manager I reports to a Director or Assistant Director. This classification supervises full, part-time, and/or student employees.
Typical Functions
- Manages the day to day operations of assigned area.
- Manages personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, disciplinary functions, and all associated paperwork.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures.
- May supervise the maintenance of buildings, including organizing daily schedules, inspecting and monitoring work areas, and examining equipment for reliability.
- May oversee housing, including checking residents in and out, inspecting conditions, assessing damages, and overseeing maintenance.
- May participate in various aspects of maintenance management, including enforcing safety procedures, working with the Fire Marshal, etc.
- May develop annual budget to include capital expenditures.
- Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal health, safety, and employment laws and regulations.
- Orders inventory and supplies; develops and maintains inventory management controls.
- Coordinates with third party vendors.
- Reviews expenditures, approves purchases, and determines labor budget.
- Participates on committees as requested.
- May plan and execute special events.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
- Skilled in the use of computers and software applications, including Word and Excel.
- Skilled in developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare reports, statements, and/or projections.
- Ability to follow and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to train and supervise employees.
- Ability to coordinate and organize schedules.
- Ability to deliver excellent customer service and satisfaction.
- Ability to foster team work.
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
- Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees are frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds).
