Summary
Incumbents in the Manager series plan, direct, and oversee the operations and budget of a University department or unit. They oversee and lead the work of employees representing at least two different skills.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Manager Senior is distinguished from the Manager III in that incumbents in the Senior level direct a work unit that is larger in size, scope, and complexity than work units directed by a Manager III.
Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities
The Manager Senior reports to a Director, Assistant Director, or a Dean. This classification supervises full, part-time, and/or student employees.
Typical Functions
- Manages the day to day operations of assigned area.
- Manages personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, disciplinary functions, and all associated paperwork.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures.
- May develop annual budget to include capital expenditures.
- Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal health, safety, and employment laws and regulations.
- Orders inventory and supplies; develops and maintains inventory management controls.
- Coordinates with third party vendors.
- Reviews expenditures, approves purchases, and determines labor budget.
- Participates on committees as requested.
- May plan and execute special events.
- May supervise construction projects, including cabinet and flooring projects.
- May prepare invoices, calculate charges, and reconcile contract settlements.
- May act as a liaison between multiple departments and the public.
- May design, review, and coordinate engineering plans with architectural plans for construction.
- May participate in the planning and design of new facilities.
- May participate in strategic planning for program or department.
- May manage a campus wide utility system.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
- Skilled in the use of computers and software applications, including Word and Excel.
- Skilled in developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare reports, statements, and/or projections.
- Ability to follow and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to train and supervise employees.
- Ability to coordinate and organize schedules.
- Ability to deliver excellent customer service and satisfaction.
- Ability to foster team work.
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
- Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, codes, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree plus seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees are frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds).
