Summary

Incumbents in the Nurse LPN position provide general patient care and basic patient education.  Incumbents perform duties which indirectly support patient care such as scheduling, recordkeeping, and maintaining supply inventories.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Nurse LPN reports to a Director. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Functions

1. Manages appointment calendar.
2. Assists care provider with examinations, treatments, special tests, education and procedures.
3. Assists patients with aftercare plans, dressings, and follow-up arrangements.
4. Prepares equipment and exam room for patient.
5. Interviews patients on phone or in person to determine chief complaint.
6. Maintains and stocks inventory of office and/or clinical supplies.
7. Reviews patient charts; checks patients in; obtains and records patients’ vital signs; and assesses reason for patient visit.
8. Records and reports observed symptoms, reactions, treatments, and changes in the patients’ condition.
9. Recognizes emergencies or deviations from common ailments that might endanger the patient.
10. May instruct patients regarding health-related issues.
11. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infections control methods.
12. May assist at health fairs.
13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

2. Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
3. Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
4. Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures.
5. Knowledge of variations in procedure and equipment used by different providers.
6. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
7. Skilled in performing medical and clinical procedures.
8. Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments.
9. Ability to provide instruction on proper care and treatment.
10. Ability to safely lift and physically manipulate patients when needed.
11. Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
12. Knowledge of clinical operations, procedures, and standards.
13. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be certified by the State Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing and registered as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Utah.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes.  This position requires moderate physical activity, including the handling of heavy weight objects up to 50 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day.  The work environment may involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following safety precautions.
