Summary

The Physical Security Tech Senior is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of physical security systems, including access control, intrusion and panic systems, research freezer monitoring, and automated securing systems. This position serves as a senior technician, providing technical guidance, training, and support to junior technicians while ensuring compliance with safety protocols and industry standards. The role involves working closely with university personnel, security teams, and external vendors to maintain and enhance security infrastructure across all USU locations.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Physical Security Tech Senior is distinguished from the Journeyman position in that incumbents require greater independence, with incumbents working under minimal supervision and possess the knowledge and experience to perform more complex tasks, including performing more complex security tasks, providing estimates, overseeing record keeping, and performing administrative duties in the Master’s absence. 

Typical Functions

  1. Installs, configures, and maintains physical security access control, intrusion and panic systems, research freezer monitoring, and automated security systems. 
  2. Troubleshoots and repairs hardware and software issues within physical security systems.
  3. Provides technical leadership, mentoring, and training to Physical Security Tech Journeyman and Apprentice employees.
  4. Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs.
  5. Collaborates with management and physical security teams to assess and enhance physical security infrastructure.
  6. Reads and interprets schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  7. Documents service and maintenance records for compliance and reporting purposes.
  8. Assists in developing physical security protocols and standard operating procedures.
  9. Coordinates with vendors and contractors to ensure timely installation and service of physical security systems.
  10. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of physical security systems, access controls, intrusion and panic systems, and freezer monitoring. 
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and compliance requirements.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in Physical Security Software Systems including; S2, CET, NetBox, Virtual Keypad ect.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience, plus three years of experience in physical security systems installation and maintenance.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires moderate physical activity, including the handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Employees are exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
