Summary

Incumbents in the Plumber Apprentice position take part in a four year, Utah Department of Labor approved, Apprenticeship Program. Incumbents participate in the necessary classroom training and on the job training, as identified in the Standards of Apprenticeship, to complete the program. Upon successful completion, a DOL “Certificate of Completion” will be presented.

Incumbents in the Plumber series perform general plumbing work in the installation, remodeling, maintenance, and repair of the University hydronic and plumbing systems. Incumbents work as team members to complete projects.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Plumber Apprentice reports to a Foreman.  This classification has no supervisory responsibilities. 

Typical Functions

  1. Assists senior plumbers by carrying, moving, and positioning materials, equipment, and tools.
  2. Assists senior plumbers in the maintenance, repair, and installation of plumbing/hydronic related equipment throughout campus.
  3. Under direct supervision, performs basic preventive maintenance on plumbing/hydronic systems and equipment as outlined.
  4. Under direct supervision, maintains, repairs, and installs general plumbing components, including toilets, urinals, faucets, hose bibs, drains, etc.
  5. Assists senior plumbers in responding to and repairing water leaks or plumbing/hydronic problems reported from campus buildings.
  6. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  7. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  8. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  10. Ability to consistently improve and learn new skills.
  11. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers.
  12. Ability to complete the classroom training and on the job training required to complete the apprenticeship program.

Minimum Qualifications

Plumbing aptitude is required. Aptitude is defined as passing the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA), with a score of 70% or higher.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
