Summary

Incumbents in the Plumber series perform general plumbing work in the installation, remodeling, maintenance, and repair of the University hydronic and plumbing systems. Incumbents work as team member to complete projects.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Plumber Senior is distinguished from the Plumber Journeyman in that incumbents in the Senior level perform duties requiring more responsibility, expertise, knowledge, and experience; and provide guidance and training to less senior technicians.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Plumber Senior reports to a Foreman.  This classification trains and guides less senior technicians.

Typical Functions

  1. Troubleshoots and repairs utility distribution systems, including heat exchangers, valves, backflows, and waste systems.
  2. Maintains, repairs, and installs plumbing/hydronic related equipment throughout campus to meet code.
  3. Performs preventive maintenance on plumbing and hydronic systems as outlined.
  4. Responds to and repairs water leaks or plumbing/hydronic problems reported from campus buildings.
  5. Ensures water quality to research labs by maintaining and repairing water softeners, distillers, reverse osmosis systems, and other water treatment equipment.
  6. Maintains the domestic water supply system to plumbing code standards.
  7. Maintains all medium and low-pressure steam lines and related equipment.
  8. Monitors proper flow on all waste, drain, and vent lines, including separators and traps.
  9. Responds to work orders on assigned campus buildings.
  10. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  11. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  12. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of state plumbing and safety codes.
  2. Advanced knowledge of plumbing/hydronic maintenance and repair techniques.
  3. Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of various plumbing systems.
  4. Basic computer skills.
  5. Customer service skills.
  6. Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  7. Skilled in welding, soldering, and brazing.
  8. Ability to troubleshoot and repair steam, water, natural gas, vacuum, and air distribution systems.
  9. Ability to read, understand, and build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  10. Ability to work without supervision.
  11. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of experience in the plumbing trade is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
