Summary

Incumbents in the Production/Broadcast Specialist classification title serve as a live, on-air host for several weekly programs and maintain broadcasting equipment and schedules. Incumbents serve as a training resource within Utah Public Radio. Incumbents work as a producer for both local and national outlets.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

Incumbents in the Production/Broadcast Specialist classification title report to Director. Incumbents may supervise and train student workers and volunteers.

Typical Functions

1. Executes daily requirements to engineer and create content for National Public Radio’s (NPR) afternoon news radio program.
2. Acts as a daily host and producer for NPR and assigned content.
3. Schedules interviews to align with production content.
4. Maintains weekday broadcast schedule and digital delivery equipment.
5. Incorporates local news, weather, and sponsor support mentions as a live on-air host while managing deadlines every ten minutes.
6. Creates, manages, and edits broadcast projects for more than seven weekly programs.
7. Operates specialized broadcasting equipment.
8. Maintains recording schedules and manages broadcast standards of production.
9. Uses audio editing software to produce final edits of programs for both broadcast and digital formats.
10. Trains and manages project volunteers from within USU, in addition to other contributors, on how to write content for local programs.
11. Reviews, writes, and edits information while supervising student interns to help Utah Public Radio Provide quality service. Trains students and part-time employees to use broadcast recording equipment.
12. Works with USU and local community nonprofit organizations to gather content and create a community events calendar for broadcast and web.
13. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to edit audio files for publishing.
2. Knowledge of broadcasting and digital delivery equipment.
3. Ability to host live, on-air broadcasting programs with all applicable challenges.
4. Knowledge of publishing procedures and requirements, including desktop publishing.
5. Ability to manage and coordinate with others.
6. Skilled in communication both oral and written.
7. Skilled in active listening as a live-air host.
8. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment.
9. Ability to work without supervision.
10. Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
11. Knowledge of journalism, marketing, and simple branding principles and techniques.
12. Skilled in related editing software including; Adobe Audition Sound Editing Software, Digital Audio Delivery, and Logitek Mosaic audio routing system.
13. Proficient with ZOOM HD2 recording techniques.
14. Skilled in customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 2 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Incumbents work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes.  Incumbents are regularly required to sit and often use repetitive hand motions. Incumbents are constantly required to listen, talk, and communicate.
