Summary

Incumbents in the Speech Pathologist II position screen, diagnose, assess, identify, and treat various types of communicative disorders. Individuals in this role demonstrate increasing independence and clinical expertise, contribute to program planning, and may lead small teams or projects under general supervision.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Speech Pathologist II reports to a Director. This classification may supervise undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships, and may provide mentorship or functional guidance to less experienced staff or student clinicians.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The AA/EO Specialist SR reports directly to the AA/EO Director.

Typical Functions

  1. Plans and implements evidence-based therapy programs for students with speech, language, and hearing disorders.
  2. Designs, monitors, and updates Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and/or Individual Education Plans (IEP) in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  3. Conducts evaluations and diagnoses using standard assessment tools; manages a moderately complex caseload with minimal supervision.
  4. Consults with families, faculty, and specialists regarding student progress and treatment recommendations; provides referrals as needed.
  5. Maintains accurate records including diagnostic reports, goals, treatment plans, and progress summaries; ensures compliance with documentation requirements.
  6. Participates in team meetings, school-wide initiatives, and professional learning communities.
  7. Collaborates with university departments to support practicum and student teaching opportunities.
  8. Provides instruction to families and caregivers on implementing therapeutic strategies at home.
  9. Mentors undergraduate and graduate students during clinical training or internships.
  10. Upholds confidentiality standards and completes required HIPAA training.
  11. May contribute to internal quality improvement or curriculum development projects.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to independently evaluate and treat speech, language, and hearing disorders.
  2. Knowledge of speech-language pathology principles, methods, and ethical standards.
  3. Competency in applying DSM-5 criteria to appropriate diagnostic processes.
  4. Strong communication and documentation skills.
  5. Ability to collaborate with educational teams and families.
  6. Familiarity with state CORE curriculum and educational frameworks.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders plus 5 years of progressively responsible clinical experience is required. Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) must be held at time of hire.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Incumbents are regularly required to sit and often use repetitive hand motions.
