Summary

Incumbents in the Speech Pathologist position screen, diagnose, assess, identify, and treat various types of communicative disorders.  Incumbents also perform advanced research and direct faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, and multi-interdisciplinary teams.  

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Speech Pathologist Senior is distinguished from the Speech Pathologist in that incumbents in the Senior level perform more complex diagnoses, have performed advanced research, and possess more years of clinical and/or academic experience.  

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Speech Pathologist Senior reports to a Director. This classification supervises undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships; as well as faculty members; less senior Speech Pathologists; and multi-interdisciplinary teams.

Typical Functions

  1. Provides supervision and training in clinics to foster a learning environment.
  2. Collaborates with appropriate professionals to organize and implement curriculum.
  3. Plans and implements remedial programs, strategies and techniques for students with language, speech and hearing disabilities.
  4. Designs, implements, and monitors Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for eligible students in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  5. Consults with parents, faculty, administrators and specialists concerning the language, speech and hearing needs of students; responds to inquiries and provides information concerning program activities and student progress; provides referrals to outside agencies as appropriate.
  6. Maintains up-to-date and accurate records and reports on each student enrolled to include medical reports; diagnostic information, student goals and objectives, conference notes from parents and other professionals, attendance and program activities; develops and maintains a schedule outlining program activities; prepares required external reports in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  7. Maintains strict confidentiality with regard to all aspects of student information.
  8. Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
  9. Supports and participates in school-wide activities.
  10. Contributes to a professional learning community in the school.
  11. Collaborates with university departments to assist students in practicum and student teaching opportunities.
  12. Instructs parents in small groups to implement evidence-based practice.
  13. Supervises undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships.
  14. Supervises faculty and multi-interdisciplinary teams.
  15. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to evaluate and treat speech, language, and hearing disorders.
  2. Knowledge of speech-language pathology theory and practice.
  3. Knowledge and skills required to accurately diagnose using DSM 5 criteria.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  5. Ability to collaborate with teachers and staff.
  6. Knowledge of state CORE curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders plus 7 years of clinical and/or academic experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes.  The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
