Summary

Incumbents in the Speech Pathologist position screen, diagnose, assess, identify, and treat various types of communicative disorders.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Speech Pathologist reports to a Director. This classification supervises undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships.

Typical Functions

  1. Plans and implements remedial programs, strategies and techniques for students with language, speech and hearing disabilities.
  2. Designs, implements, and monitors Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and/or Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for eligible students in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  3. Consults with parents, faculty, administrators and specialists concerning the language, speech, and hearing needs of students; responds to inquiries and provides information concerning program activities and student progress; provides referrals to outside agencies as appropriate.
  4. Maintains up-to-date and accurate records and reports on each student enrolled to include medical reports; diagnostic information, student goals and objectives, conference notes from parents and other professionals, attendance and program activities; develops and maintains a schedule outlining program activities; prepares required external reports in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  5. Completes annual HIPAA training, ensuring strict confidentiality with regard to all aspects of student information.
  6. Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
  7. Supports and participates in school-wide activities.
  8. Contributes to a professional learning community in the school.
  9. Collaborates with university departments to assist students in practicum and student teaching opportunities.
  10. Instructs parents in small groups to implement evidence-based practice.
  11. Supervises undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to evaluate and treat speech, language, and hearing disorders.
  2. Knowledge of speech-language pathology theory and practice.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Ability to collaborate with teachers and staff.
  5. Knowledge of state CORE curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and completion of a clinical fellowship as well as Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), or ability to complete fellowship and obtain CCC within one year of employment, is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
