Summary

Incumbents in the Supervisor series oversee, coordinate, and lead the day-to-day activities of an assigned work unit including supervising employees. Incumbents set goals for performance and deadlines, organize workflow, ensure that employees understand their duties and designated tasks, and monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback

Distinguished Characteristics

The Supervisor Senior is distinguished from the Supervisor III in that incumbents in the senior level have the knowledge and experience to perform duties in support of a technical department requiring specialized skills.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Supervisor Senior may report to a Dean, Vice-President, Department Head, Executive Director, Director, or Manager. This classification supervises staff and student employees.

Typical Functions

  1. Hires, trains, plans, schedules, assigns, monitors, and evaluates the work of assigned staff.
  2. Ensures adherence to quality standards and deadlines.
  3. Ensures that employees follow documented policies and procedures.
  4. Creates and maintains a positive team work environment.
  5. Oversees the day-to-day operations of assigned area or department.
  6. Communicates with clients via email and/or telephone.
  7. Coordinates projects and delegates job assignments to team members.
  8. May perform duties as part of the team.
  9. Creates detailed outlines of procedures for projects, including labor and material budgets.
  10. Orders materials for projects.
  11. Maintains and performs simple repairs on equipment, tools, and office equipment.
  12. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  13. Manages operational policies, budgets, and procedures though weekly review of pertinent paperwork.
  14. Collaborates with departments within the campus community as well as organizations in the community at large.
  15. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Nine years of experience in a related field plus six years of experience supervising others or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on specific function of the work each unit supervises. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents are not protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises, vibrations, from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects around 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time. Incumbents nearly continuously listen, hear, and talk.
