Summary

Incumbents in the Teacher, Adults with Disabilities series teach individuals with disabilities the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain and maintain employment through the provision of direct one- on-one instruction, tutoring, and counseling as well as leading large and small group learning activities.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

Incumbents in the Teacher, Adults with Disabilities series report to a Program Coordinator.

Typical Functions

1. Teach employment related social skills for learners with disabilities in both large/small group classroom settings and in one-on-one tutoring sessions.
2. Provide classroom and community-based instruction focusing on job exploration and job readiness skills.
3. Conduct interest inventories and skills assessments, develop resumes, learn and teach current job search strategies and tools, develop interviewing skills, and manage employer encounters.
4. Provide one-on-one, real time, job coaching/tutoring including education on how to handle specific job tasks and display appropriate behaviors.
5. Engage in job development tasks to create additional community-based employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
6. Engage in employer and public education outreach in regards to the benefits of hiring and working with people with disabilities.
7. Teach and lead classes.
8. Write thorough and professional client reports.
9. Coordinates transportation with clients and students to prospective job sites.
10. Other job-related responsibilities as assigned.

9. Ability to interpret and integrate assessment information needed to develop individualized teaching plans.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in a related field plus two years of experience, or any other equivalent combination of education and experience. Possess, or able to obtain within 90 days of employment, a current Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators (ACRE) Certification.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. This position requires some physical activity, may include the handling of light weight objects up to 20 pounds, and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Employees may bend, stoop, or kneel, and often use repetitive hand motions. Incumbents almost constantly listen, hear, and talk.
