Summary
Incumbents in the Water Distribution Operator position perform journey level duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the University water distribution system. Incumbents test and sample water in the system and campus swimming pools; maintain an adequate, safe, and continuous water service; and ensure that water quality standards are met.
Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities
The Water Distribution Operator reports to a Foreman. This classification may train and guide less senior employees.
Typical Functions
- Maintains and tests water system areas such as wells, pumping stations, and reservoirs.
- Ensures that water systems are safe, clean, in good repair, and meet State of Utah regulations.
- Performs testing and sampling including chlorine testing, bacterial sampling, and various state required sampling. Adjusts chlorine treatment levels as necessary.
- Performs testing of backflow prevention devices to ensure code compliance. Fills out reports and sends to the appropriate authority.
- Repairs, replaces, and/or installs backflow prevention devices as needed.
- Maintains the water quality of campus swimming pools; performs testing and adjusts chemical levels as needed.
- Inspects sumps and grease interceptors on campus and has them cleaned as needed.
- Inspects and tests neutralization systems to ensure they are working properly.
- Inspects, disassembles, and repairs damaged or malfunctioning control devices.
- Provides technical support.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of state plumbing and safety codes.
- Knowledge of water quality test equipment and procedures
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles and operational characteristics of water treatment feeding systems.
- Ability to perform maintenance and repair on water treatment equipment.
- Ability to monitor and maintain water quality control standards.
- Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
- Ability to monitor and maintain quality control standards.
- Skilled at technical problem solving.
- Knowledge of electronics related to water quality systems, steam systems, and cooling systems.
- Computer skills.
- Ability to work without supervision.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of experience in the plumbing trade plus licensure as a journeyman plumber in the State of Utah is required. The following certifications must be obtained within six months: Water Distribution IV State Certification, Cross-Connection Control Class II- Backflow Assembly Tester Certification, and Pool/Spa Operator Certification
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
