It is true that the aboriginal forms of an entertainment genre often seem clumsy and uninteresting long after their heyday, at least to the majority of viewers. After all, how many early twentieth-century silent movies have members of the general public today seen? The answer is very few. Even though historians will find much value in a genre's earliest efforts, copies of such works rarely exist in sufficient quantity to survive accidental destruction or the general devastations of time.
