Welcome to the Stat 2000 Webpage. This page contains news and
additional information regarding this class that becomes
available during the semester.
It is updated whenever
new dates, times, or other information become available.
This course closely follows Moore/McCabe (1998) as described
in the syllabus.
And here are the news:
- 1) Stat 2000 Curriculum Spring 2000.
(1/10/2000)
- 2) Statistics is fun! If you don't think so, better check this
Web site first:

- 3) Homework 1 (due 1/24/2000).

- 4) Homework 2 (due 1/31/2000).
(1/21/2000)
- 5) Homework 3 (due 2/7/2000).

- 6) You can take a look at old quizzes and finals from
my two Stat 250 classes I taught at George Mason University.
These classes have a lot in common with our current Stat 2000
class. However, there are a lot of differences. First, we are
using a different textbook, but the topics remain the same.
Then, there may be material we discussed in our Stat 2000 class
that has not been discussed in my old Stat 250 classes.
Similarly, there are things that have been discussed in
my old Stat 250 classes we have not discussed so far (or will
not discuss at all) in our Stat 2000 class. Also note that
there have been 3 quizzes and one final in those Stat 250 classes
while we only have 2 quizzes and a final so the material
examined in quizzes does not exactly match. Anyway, I think it
is a very good preparation for our Stat 2000 quizzes (and
also the final) to look at some of these old quizzes and finals.
If you are interested in solutions for the 1999 quizzes and
the final, go to the Stat 250 Web page from 1999.
And here is the place where to find the old exams:

Please note that the lecture on Wednesday 4/5/2000 will take
place in Education 131 and the lecture on Friday 4/7/2000
will take place in Geology 405. These are electronic classrooms
where we can use statistical software packages on the Web and
use Microsoft Excel on a PC. Also note that these lectures
will we taught by Dr. Vukasinovic.
(4/2/2000)
- 17) Homework 11 (due 4/12/2000).
(4/3/2000)
- 18) Homework 12 (due 4/21/2000).
(4/13/2000)
- 19) As I mentioned in class earlier today, I will be teaching
a "Web-Based Statistics" class during the first summer session.
If you liked the Web-Based tools we used in our homework assignments,
want to experiment with additional statistical tools (similar
to Statlets) on the Web, and learn about other topics on Statistics
and the Web, then check the Web at
http://www.math.usu.edu/~symanzik/teaching/2000_stat5810/web_ad.html
for more details and contact me in case of any question.
(4/14/2000)
- 20) Extra Credit (Parts 1 to 4) (due 4/26/2000).
(4/14/2000)
- 21) The Final
will take place on
Thursday, 5/4/2000,
from 12:00noon to 1:50pm in our regular classroom.
You are allowed to bring your calculator and a 2-sided note sheet.
All required tables (Standard Normal, Random Digits, etc.) will be
provided.
The final will be comprehensive. You should expect that about
1/3 of the final will cover recent material that was not part of any
of the previous 2 quizzes and about 2/3 of the final will cover material
discussed up to Quiz 2. Note that we discussed a lot of material that
is not included in the textbook. You also should be able to read
and interpret a Statlets or Excel output.
(4/17/2000)
- 22) Homework 13 (due 4/26/2000).
(4/19/2000)
- 23) Extra Credit (Part 5) (due 4/28/2000).
(4/23/2000)
- 24) Due to several requests, I agreed to generally extend the
due date for all 5 Extra Credit questions
until Friday, 4/28/2000.
Even if you already turned in some of the Extra Credit
questions today, you still may work on additional questions
until Friday.
(4/26/2000)
- 25) Last help session: As announced
in class, our last help session will be during our regular lecture
time on Friday, 4/28/2000. We will not discuss any new material
then. If you have any questions regarding some of the homework
assignments or some general questions, you should definitely
attend.
I will be out of town Saturday 4/29/2000 through Tuesday 5/2/2000
and most likely will not even have e-mail access during those days.
The last possibility to answer questions (before the final)
will be during extended office hours on Wednesday 5/3/2000 from 2-4pm
in my office in Lund (room 325).
(4/26/2000)
- 26) Several people asked for some review questions. If I have
some time left before my departure on Saturday
(currently, highest priority has the preparation of the final),
I will post them on this Web site before Saturday morning. In any
case, it might be a good idea to
work on Quizzes and Finals of my Stat 250 classes at
George Mason University - but read the warning posted under 6) above.
