Cynthia Hailes’ bronze sculpture Playground is located on the north side of the Edith Bowen Laboratory School. Hailes, a USU alumnus from the Department of Art and Design, made the whimsical sculpture as a tribute to faculty, students, and staff working at the Edith Bowen Laboratory School. The sculpture also has connections to the Emma Eccles Jones Early Childhood Education and Research Center. Opened in 2010, the research center brings together USU scientists and educators who focus on early childhood education to foster an interdisciplinary collaboration on research. The laboratory school opened in 1928 to train students preparing to become professional teachers through hands-on classroom education of over 300 children in grades K-5.
