Efficient and Sustainable Buildings Initiative

Why We're Interested

We spend over 90% of our lives in buildings (shocking, we know). Sustainable buildings are proven to be more comfortable for occupants, boost worker productivity, support healthier indoor air quality, and cost less over their lifecycle than traditional buildings.

Our Goals

magnifying glass

Incentivize Sustainable Building Design

Investigate carbon pricing on capital development and new construction projects to incentivize sustainable building design and long-term thinking.

air conditioner

Invest in HVAC Management

Continually invest in HVAC management and reduce energy use intensity in USU buildings by 5% each year.

solar panel

Build Future-Ready

Build “electrification ready” and “solar ready”, aligning new building construction with carbon neutrality and decarbonization goals.

Reduce Water Consumption

Reduce water consumption through utilizing top of the line water sense appliances.

How We're Doing It

1

28 LEED certified buildings.

The current LEED certified buildings are USU's most energy efficient, water wise, and health conscious constructions.

2

All new construction is LEED Silver or higher.

3

Adherence to an energy conservation policy.

USU Policy 5310 outlines behavioral and equipment installation guidelines that will result in energy conservation and reduced emissions.

4

Full-time energy commissioner employed in Energy Management in Facilities.

5

Engaging our community.

EnergyWars is an annual competition pitting departments against each other in a race to reduce energy use. Think you can win? Check out your building’s energy use on our sustainability data dashboard.
