Zero Waste Initiative

Why We're Interested

Whether we like it or not, the stuff we chuck goes somewhere when we’re done with it. When it goes to landfills, it releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and contributes to ecological degradation locally and nationwide. Historically, landfills have been placed by neighborhoods where low-income communities reside, causing access and equity issues for entire communities.

Rethinking waste – and if we need single-use items – can help us reduce our impact AND save money.

Our Goals

Zero Waste Policy

Adopt a zero waste and recycling policy at USU, statewide.

Eliminate Plastic Waste

Eliminate plastic waste from USU operations and purchasing, and empower students and staff to choose reusable and compostable options by 2030.

Reduce Contamination

Reduce contamination to only 5% of our recycling and compost streams.

How We're Doing It

1

Collaboration.

Collaboration with Dining Services to investigate procurement contracts, local sourcing, and plastics reduction.

2

Composting.

Composting on the Logan campus. Drop offs are available at the TSC and QCNR patios (plus 10 more locations coming soon!) for student and staff to chuck food waste.

  • Food waste is processed in the Green Mountain Air Flow and large compost processing area with the Landscape Operations and Maintenance.

3

Race to Zero Waste.

Race to Zero Waste is an annual, nationwide competition where we host a series of events to get the campus community involved in reducing waste on campus.

4

True Blue Reuse and Repair.

True Blue Reuse and Repair is a student run thrift pop up housed in COSAS.
