A fairytale, they say? Hardly. This snowman is as big as he could be.

It took six hours of work, 25 people and a whole lot of snow, but Smithfield resident Paul Sorenson and his accomplices in winter glee have completed what they believe to be the biggest snowman in the state.

Standing 20 feet tall and a 36-foot circumference, the giant snowman, which was built on Saturday in Logan Canyon, is part of a seven-year tradition.

Sorenson said the tradition started when his parents were snowmobiling in the canyon. While they were out, Sorenson and a friend built a snowman on their snowmobile trailer. When they returned, a giant snowman greeted them. After that, it became an annual event.

“We have a little streak of craziness in us, which evolved into building a giant snowman,” said Sorenson’s brother, Scott. “Every year it had to be bigger than the last.”

Eight-year-old Bronson Low spent most of his Saturday throwing snowballs at the workers since he couldn’t climb the ladders. Low said he hopes the snowman will last until next winter.

Drivers coming from both directions stopped to admire the snowman. Logan resident Laura Jensen said she had to stop to look what was happening.

“It’s just beautiful,” Jensen said. “I’ve never seen a snowman this big.”

“It definitely made my head turn and wonder what it was, to the point I had to turn around to stop and take pictures,” said Mike Elder of Logan. “In fact, I got out of my car, put on my coat and gloves and went and helped.”

Until he melts away, the snowman can be found just past the Tony Grove turn-off on the west side of the road. Pictures of the Logan Canyon Snowman can also be found on Facebook.
