Rental assistance for COVID-19 relief now available for Cache Valley residents

Logan residents who have been financially impacted by COVID-19 could receive up to $2,000 per month in rental assistance.

Bear River Association of Governments, or BRAG, has a new program designed to provide relief for low-income renters struggling in Cache Valley.

One of President Joe Biden's first actions after taking office in January was to call for an extension of the eviction moratorium for renters who have fallen behind on payments during the global pandemic.

As a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorized an extension of the moratorium through March 31, giving renters a chance to get caught up on payments.

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 1 in 5 households were behind on rent in December 2020. Although the actions of Biden and the CDC may temporarily help keep citizens sheltered, it might only delay the inevitable. The wait could be too long before wide-spread federal aid arrives to renters.

Utahns in need of urgent help can dial 211 and speak to a crisis specialist. Professionals will direct individuals to their local agencies for further assistance. Cache Valley residents facing future rental evictions can seek immediate relief through BRAG, which has set aside state funds for residents affected by COVID-19.

"Cache Valley residents are lucky because BRAG set money aside last month to provide immediate rental relief," said Saira Enriquez, a 211 specialist. "It's been hard turning so many Utahns away from COVID-19 rental assistance because of the lack of additional federal funds needed."

BRAG's Housing Assistance Program is available to assist renters with up to $2,000 per month of expenses, including rent, utilities, late fees and security deposits. Renters may apply for up to three months of assistance at one time by filling out BRAG's intake packet.

"It has been rewarding to help relieve financial pressure on Cache Valley residents," said Marcela Patch, a team leader who works to secure continued housing for renters in need. "This new program allows all individuals in need to successfully re-allocate their resources towards other essential items during this difficult time. No one should have to risk homelessness during this pandemic."
