Health fair game night to focus on healthy relationships
A not-so-newlywed game night is the latest addition to Utah State University’s annual health fair.
“We wanted to come up with an event that was going to be more impactful than just a fair,” said Felicia Gallegos, the Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information office outreach and prevention coordinator.
The health fair will be held on Wednesday in the Taggart Student Center auditorium.
In the past, the fair hasn’t been the most effective event, according to Ryan Barfuss, the prevention specialist for the Student Health and Wellness Center. Barfuss hopes the game night will reach a broader audience.
Gallegos said the event is for couples and single individuals. There will be two rounds with a winner for each.
During the first round, the single participants will be paired and sent to socialize with each other in a separate room.
While they are getting acquainted, the couples will take to the stage. A question will be presented and one individual in each couple will write down what they think their partner would answer. If they get the answer right they will receive a point.
Once a winner is declared for the couples' round, the single partnerships will play the same game with easier questions.
“The whole purpose of it,” Gallegos said, “is to make sure that we, ourselves, and our friends are getting into healthy relationships.”
In between the rounds, an educational video on healthy relationships will be shown. Information about healthy relationships will be integrated into both rounds.
“We are trying to promote the resources that students have on campus,” Barfuss said.
Gallegos said if the game night is successful it will be a bigger part of the fair next year.
“This will be a really fun date night activity,” Gallegos said. “Or just something fun to do Wednesday night that is dedicated to our campus creating a safe space.”
